April 5 Articles to read
Happy Easter!
So, I was quoted in an article on Huffington Post. CRAZY, right? I mean, it's hardly a feature presentation on me, but it is an important topic. The Huffington Post article links to the original Slate article and it's all about the cost of a miscarriage. Lots of interesting points about healthcare in America, loss, and financial implications of a loss with the complexities of healthcare in America. The author at Slate emailed me after finding my Cost of a Loss post and I emailed her a response to her questions. So much more to say about this topic but it's something I've posted about many times before. So anyway, on HuffPost, woah.
Other articles I read and am sort of obsessed with? Pregnant Chicken: about babies being 'cake'---and how I'm totally going to be that older lady telling young moms to savor this season of life. Because it's easy to forget the hard stuff, man. THANK GOD. Fantastic read.
And again on Huffington Post: It Goes So Fast. But not how you think---I have my 34th birthday this month and yes, I know that is far from being 'old'. But birthdays do make one ponder the passage of time. This was a great read and a nice change in perspective.

weekend top 5
one. kitchen sink stuffed peppers
I made these stuffed peppers last week and they were SO stinkin' easy.. I made another version again using sausage + quinoa instead of ground beef and rice as listed in the recipe below.
basically, anything you have in your fridge or pantry that needs to be used or tossed is fair game for these peppers.
--
brown 1 pound of lean ground beef in a skillet with about a tablespoon of olive oil. add in 1 small chopped onion + 3 cloves fresh minced garlic until onion is translucent and the garlic is fragrant. stir in 4 cups fresh baby spinach and sauté until wilted down; stir in 1 can white beans, rinsed and drained + 1 cup cooked brown rice. lastly, add 1 cup jarred tomato sauce and about 1 cup of shredded cheese (I used monterey jack because thats what I had in the fridge!)
fill 6 bell peppers, seeded and de-veined, and cover with foil. bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes, remove from oven and top with more tomato sauce and shredded cheese (if desired) and allow the cheese to melt.
--
such a quick and healthy recipe!

two. nana + duke's quick trip
my parents came in for a super short visit on Friday night and left Saturday morning. we grabbed a casual bite to eat at the mall and let the chicks run in the play area and that's about the highlight of the trip. aside from the girls talking abut "manna and duke" for the rest of the weekend. that makes me so happy to hear them acknowledge my parents outside of the short visits we have.

three. maternity photos
this weekend was SO COLD. like 30 degrees for the high. I kept seeing all these social media posts about negative NINE and we are over here in Texas closing schools early for flurries on Friday afternoon:) Saturday we had made plans to take some maternity pictures, just me and Jordan, and oh emm gee it was chilly! thankful for the coffee Britt got me to keep me semi-warm!
the little bits of snow on the ground and the cool air made for some beautiful pictures! sharing more on that tomorrow, BUT ya'll my favorite Christmas coffee flavors are being phased out and so I ordered the smoked butterscotch latte.. well, I had to make another trip for one on Sunday afternoon because its THAT good. I am not a fan of sweet coffee at all whatsoever, and this one has just the right amount of sweetness.

four. lazy sunday
Jordan has been working a couple shifts a week in the ER at a hospital near our house as a medic, and yesterday happened to be his shift- so me and the girls literally did NOTHING all day.

nothing.

at.all.

until we made a run to grab my prenatal vitamins prescription and a swing through starbucks for a couple of butterscotch lattes and a few chocolate chip cookies.

five. first lady love
my big girls. they talk about Brady A LOT. Parker is such a sweet soul and mentions wanting him to be here soon. I find random little stuffed animals in his (empty) nursery that she's placed in there and says "brother needs it for when he sleeps, mom"
heart bursting.
Jolie, my laid back baby girl, talks about how big he's getting- my belly is HUGE but "he will be SO cute when he finally gets here". she asks when she can hold him and if he will love her..
heart exploding.

Top 5 Things NOT To Say To a Mom With A Late Potty Trainer
In my humble opinion, potty training has got to the be the hardest, most frustrating time of parenthood. I understand it doesn't work that way for everyone, but for me I have struggled with not one, not two, but three hard to train preschoolers. I would have had more children, but I waived the flag when I realized that with the time and money that I have spent training my three, I could have trained six "normal" kids. I have gathered a plethora of information on how to handle potty training parents you know who might be struggling. So here is a list of 5 helpful suggestions on what not to say to parents of late potty trainers:
1. "Oh, is she still not potty trained?.....How old is she now?" - Yes, I get it. My kid is still in diapers, thank you so very much for pointing that out to me. Furthermore, your question about age is really just a thinly veiled judgment, rude at best and insulting at worst. You and I both know by listening to her talk and the fact that she is a head taller then a normal sized two-year old clearly means she is "too old" to be in diapers. I get it. This question is in no way helpful and actually makes me feel more horrible about the situation than I already do. Don't. Just Don't!
2. "You know what worked for me..."- Trust me when I tell you that any parent whose child is over the age of 3 1/2 doesn't need to hear this. We have already Googled every method we can think of, read every book, talked to our pediatrician, experimented with strategies, and bashed our heads against the wall at least half a dozen times. There is a very high probability that the miracle solution that you are about to proffer is not something we need or want to hear. Unless specifically requested DO NOT tell me how your magic bullet was the M&M method, bare bottom drills, sticker chart, jelly bean jar, offering him something he really wants or making him want to be part of the big kids. Been there done that....now I have to go change another diaper.
3. "Well I just made them change/clean up after themselves."- Seriously? How does this even work? I attempted this method with my middle child when she was approaching four and do you know what it got me? A bathroom covered in *redacted* and a whole stinkin' (literally) load of laundry. What it did not produce, despite 4 dedicated weeks, was a potty trained child. In fact, I would pay good money to meet the child that this method actually worked on because I feel like they would be akin to a unicorn or the Loch Ness monster - pure fantasy.
5. "My child potty trained in X-days at X-age." - Pretty much anything along the lines of indicating that your child potty trained in 3 days at 18 months is bound to be met with jealously and resentment by anyone still having to change disturbingly large diaper disasters at the age of 4. I feel a little piece of my soul die every time I hear my almost 4 year old say, "Mommy, it is time to change me." It isn't that we don't want to celebrate your amazing success, it is just that right now, in the thick of our frustration we most likely can't dig deep enough to get past our own angst. If you know someone is struggling with potty training it is best to avoid sharing those stories with them until it is all over. Then, and only then, is it okay to say, "I felt so bad for you having to deal with that for so long, you know little Jr. only took 3 days to potty train at 18 months and it was just so easy." It is safe at that point because then we can sit quietly in our own smug superiority and think how we had to fight in the trenches and persevered. We didn't have it handed to us on a silver platter.
I hope this list has helped you. Remember, just like you can't force an anorexic to eat, you can't force a potty resistant child to "get over it" and start using the bathroom. Parents of late potty trainers are often stressed out, frustrated and just a little bit jealous- so tread carefully. We will get there too- eventually. As it is so often stated to me by others, "most kids don't go to kindergarten in diapers."

5 Most Common Potty Training Mistakes
Let's face it, potty training is probably one of the hardest things you are going to face with your toddler or preschooler. If you found this page, you have most likely been googling this potty training topic for a while, and weren't as lucky as the mom at playgroup who claims "he just potty trained himself". There are a million tips out there on how to potty train your child, and all the information is pretty much the same. So instead, let's talk about the possible mistakes you could be making during potty training. Because in my opinion when it comes to potty training, there is a lot more you can be doing wrong, than doing right, that may be the cause of unsuccessful potty training. Here are the most common mistakes parents make when beginning potty training.
If you want potty training to be successful, then your child has to be ready. Potty training a 15 month old and wondering why he or she is not getting it, is frustrating for both you and your child. I have seen 15 month month olds potty trained, but it's not very common. Most children are ready at 22 months of age, so trying before then may be a challenge.
This is a huge no no. If you have made the commitment to potty train your child, then you have to make a promise not to revert back to diapers. No matter what! What kind of message are you sending your child if you expect him to use the potty, but slap on a diaper when you have to go to out? There are plenty of options for outings during training, if you absolutely have to go out. You can get a travel seats that fold in your purse and even piddle pads for car seats (pictured below).
If you don't have to go out, then don't. Make a commitment to stay home. Potty training is no joke! and treating it as such will lead to failure. If you are serious about this, then you have to commit to a long weekend or do it during a time that you can stay home. The first couple of days you are going to have major accidents, so it is best to be home. It's easier for you and it's less stressful for your little one.
A lot of parents get frustrated after a day or 2 of messy floors, constipation, accidents, etc. I know, because I was one of those parents. Some children may need a little more time. It took my daughter 5 days to be pee trained, and 7 to be poop trained. If I gave up after a the first EXTREMELY horrible 3 days, she wouldn't be potty trained right now. Give your child at least a week. It usually doesn't take any longer than that.
This is a biggie. Many parents just keep trying over and over, and potty training continues to be a massive fail. Some kids are more stubborn than others. Some are defiant or just really afraid of the potty. With these kids, the traditional potty training tips are just not going to work. Bare bottom methods, or forcing your child to potty train may be traumatic for a child that has such fears. Knowing how to respond to these types of situations, will be crucial to your success.
If you have tried potty training on your own and have been unsuccessful then I would recommend a good potty training book or guide. There is nothing wrong with getting a book with tips, a program, guide etc. There is a reason these things are available, because not all children are easy to train, and sometimes without help or guidance you will just keep facing the same road blocks. I suggest getting something that is going to give you a step by step process. My favorite is the "Start Potty Training" program. Here is my review of it, as well as other popular 3 day potty training programs.
1. Potty Training when your child is not ready.
2. Allowing diapers to be worn "sometimes."
3. Going out during training.
4. Not trying long enough.
5. Not getting help, when it's not working.

CCs 5 week update
Cecelia is 5 weeks old today and since I JUST did a mega-post for her one month update, I don't have much to say. Except that she had her one month check up today and all is well with her growth. She moved from the 25th percentile for weight at her one week appointment all the way up to 75th percentile today---since she is a whopping 10lbs 2oz! Remember, her chunky brother was 10lbs 3oz at this point. Hilarious to me, since she seems so much smaller than him! And then she is also really tall, which isn't too surprising considering her genes. But she is 22.5 inches now, up from 20.5 at birth, which makes her in the 90th percentile for girls her age. No wonder she is fussy in the evenings--lady is growing! Those 0-3 outfits and her cloth diapers are both screaming my name now that she is so much bigger.
He also thought her big fat scary spit up episodes are normal as long as it doesn't get worse, as long as she isn't in pain, and as long as she keeps growing so well. Sort of what I figured, but it helps to hear that my pediatrician isn't worried. We are up to six total barf-all-over-the-place episodes now. I guess I'm getting used to getting drenched in my own breast milk and Cecelia isn't phased by it at all.
Overall, she is doing a lot better in the evenings in the past few days. Less freaking out, more content times, and I can feel myself relaxing more and more each day. I survived my first two nights alone with both kids, without Nate as my team mate in parenting, too! It was really nerve wracking and I was dreading those nights/days ahead of time. But with some awesome in-laws that helped out with dinner and evening times, and some well-behaved kids, I made it as a single mom just fine. I don't want to do that again any time soon, but I know I could in a pinch. Bedtimes for two kids alone = no freaking joke.
Other pictures from last week, minus the Instagram ones since I have a lot of new followers now! :
Little strawberry had a GREAT hair day and I couldn't get over how good it looks laying somewhat flat and clean.
Truman's idea: 'Swaddle me up, mom!'
Another strawberry outfit---looking really chunky here, if you ask me.
Peaceful little angel snoozing away...
