3 Day Potty Training Is It Possible

I'm sure you have come across 3 day potty training methods that promise to potty train your child in 3 days. But you wonder if such methods are just gimmicks. Same here! When I started potty training my daughter, she was such a hard case. I started looking into all of these potty training methods for girls, programs, and books. I was so desperate and wanted a quick fix. "Only 3 days!" I thought... that's awesome!

But which program or book do I choose? What potty training method is most effective? There are so many out there that promise different things. They all differ in how to approach potty training. My daughter was so scared of the potty, and stubborn at the same time. So I had to find a program that was going to consider her temperament and fears. So I decided to do what any good blogger would do. I decided to review some of these popular programs. For myself, and my readers...you're welcome!

First let's answer the question, "Can I potty train my child in 3 days?"

What is the best potty training method? Well that depends on how you define potty train. If you mean that your child will be completely accident free after 3 days, then the answer is NO. And any program that promises you that, you should definitely stay away from. Your child will have accidents and that is completely normal.

3 day potty training
If you think that your child will be diaper free at night time after only 3 days, then the answer is also a resounding NO! Being able to hold urine in during the night is a developmental thing. Your child's bladder has to signal the brain and wake her up. That is something that happens with age. This is not something you can train or control. Sure a few lucky parents will take away diapers during the day, and their child will stay dry at night too. But those are a lucky few, and usually the ones that start potty training late, meaning the child has already achieved that physiological development.

Now if you define potty training as your child being able to control pee or poop and let it go in potty or toilet. You expect a few accidents here and there, and you don't think night-time control is a prerequisite. Then YES, it is possible to potty train in 3 days.

Now let's talk about the different potty training methods and programs out there.

Keep in mind that they all have pretty much the same concept. Which is that you get rid of diapers, devote yourself to at least 3 days of stay at home potty training, and not use pull-ups to sabotage the process. So I will discuss the main differences between them.

#1 Pick Start Potty Training Program, by Carol Cline

Out of all the programs I have reviewed, this one is my favorite potty training method. This program is created by a mother of 4, and daycare owner who has tons of experience with potty training toddlers. In this program, Carol teaches you an easy to follow method of potty training, with no pressure to nighttime train. What I really love is that she covers a variety of topics. She talks about differences between potty training boys and girls. She has special sections in the program for special needs children (autism, down syndrome etc). There is a section especially for twins/multiples, and older children who may be more difficult to train. The best part of this program is the "bumps in the road" section, which every potty training parent will face during potty training. In this section she addresses fear of pooping, wetting the bed, tantrums, regression, public restrooms and so much more. She also teaches you how to handle outings to places like the mall, fairs, pools, and even airplane travels. I also love the fact that you can ask her questions when they come up during the training process (and trust me, your always going to have questions). Carol offers a "lifeline" where you can reach her directly, with any unique questions you may have.

The personal consultations is what had me sold. This program goes way beyond a quick 3 day potty training method, Carol Cline literally helps you through EVERYTHING. There isn't a topic that she doesn't cover. You are truly getting your money's worth. That is why I recommend this program above any other. Don't be discouraged by the gimmicky sales page. The site could use a little work in the marketing department. I bet many parents are turned off by the silly video. But if you overlook that, it's a really great program. Another great thing about the program is that it's available for immediate download, so you don't have to wait to start potty training. Here is the newest version of the Start Potty Training Program .

3 day potty training, potty training methods

No-Sweat Potty Training, by Dana Obleman

This is another popular potty training program. And as most of the other programs, you ditch the diapers, offer tremendous praise and rewards for success. The main difference with this program is that your child is allowed to wear diapers at night. Dana considers daytime and nighttime training as two separate entities. Dana says "you should also understand (and let your child know) that he’ll still be using diapers at nighttime, and that nighttime diapers are OK — even for big kids! (The fact is that bladder control at night takes longer to master.)" This alone is a huge plus in my book. I need a program that's going to offer a realistic method and approach, not a quick gimmick. What I also like about Dana Obleman is that you can get lots of freebies right from her site. Useful information that may answer your questions, before you even decide to purchase the program. For example, right now you can get a free PDF where Dana talks about potty training myths, and gives you tips on how to potty train. You can get that here without purchasing the program.

3 Day Potty Training by, Lora Jensen

A program that quickly gained popularity (I'm guessing it has something to do with title). The gist of this program is that you take away all diapers, put on underwear, and don't ever revert back to diapers. You offer liquids and high fiber foods. And you praise and reward your child for using the potty. It's a pretty simple program, straightforward and easy to follow. There are a few things I didn't like. First Lora has you refer to accidents as "yucky" or "pew".

Now my little girl had a very bad fear of "letting it go." (you can read about that HERE) Among all my research, I learned that kids with these fears usually view their "duty" as part of themselves and their body. In my opinion, the worst thing you can do is call "a part of your child's body", "yucky". That's a horrible idea, and will only make your child feel ashamed. The other thing that was a deal breaker was that Lora has you take away diapers, even at night-time. I agree taking them away during the day, but as I mentioned before night-time training is a developmental milestone, that matures with age. Lora says that if your child is at least 22 months old, they should be waking up dry and gives you a few different options of "nighttime training". I tried her method and it just didn't work. There is no way my 22 month old was going to stay dry at night. That is not something you can "train". She wet the bed over and over. When she woke up, the diaper had cold pee, and she had no idea she had done it. Meaning she did at some point during the night while she was asleep. Waking my daughter up from her sleep to take her potty just wasn't an option for us. And you can't really change things up either, Lora says you have to "follow the program to the T" for it to be successful. This program may work for others, but it didn't work for us.

So there you have it! A quick guide to the most popular 3 day potty training programs that promise to potty train your child in a few days. If there are any you would like me to review that I haven't mentioned please leave me a comment below, and I will try my best to get a copy for review

April 8 Selfies Save the Day

Tonight was one of those nights when we all started running out of steam, patience, and energy well before bedtime. It's both my greatest joy to feel so needed by three children and also my biggest challenge. So many needs when it's physically impossible to do everything for everyone at the same time.

A hungry baby that wants to be held and cannot consume food fast enough for his liking. An emotional daughter that wants to be held/doesn't want to talk/is in a mood. A particular oldest who wants to keep a bandaid on his finger for a microscopic cut. Which would be feasible if I didn't make him take a bath, potentially loosening the beloved bandaid from his wound. It's really a tough life sometimes.

I took some deep breaths. We took some selfies. Saying, 'Don't ANYONE smile, don't you dare!' worked like a charm.

Wednesdays, man. They are no joke. Having three kids is no joke. But it's still the best and I love it even when I want to poke my eyes with a dull spoon. Which is only sometimes, don't worry.

Videos 5K Fathers Day

1. Videos to share of baby boy include: his first time swimming (he's clearly indifferent in these clips), his first road trip (Henry steals the show, really), and his first time in his Jumparoo (I am clearly very excited about this one).

2. Today Nate and I ran in our first organized race together since April of 2009, when we did the STL half marathon. Coincidentally, this just so happened to be my first race since that time and the first one as a mommy runner. I wasn't exactly nervous about finishing this 5K since I'm running 3-4.5 miles at a time nowadays but I did want to push myself to run a little faster than my new norm. You see, pre-Truman I would run a 9 minute mile or so and was training to run a full marathon sub-4 hours (still my goal for 'someday') which to me is like the holy grail. But since my return to running at 6 weeks post birth, I've held a nice and slow but comfortable pace of about a 10 minute mile. No need to kill myself out there, I just enjoy a leisurely jog every now and then and have been gradually trying to increase my speed a hair. So going into this 5K I really only wanted to break 30 minutes and I would've been happy.

Then there's my crazy husband who didn't take a huge running hiatus like I did, nor did he push a living being out of his private parts, so he's pretty much in great shape unlike moi. I informed him that I did not want to do anything stupid during this race, like try to run 8 minute miles or something, and I hoped we could run together. He didn't really answer my underlying question of 'Are you going to be sprinting for this whole race, thus ticking me off because I'll totally want to keep up with you?'

So when the horn sounded at the starting line and I saw Nate literally take off like a bat out of hell, I should have known I was in for it. Oh, and it was approximately 85 degrees at 3pm during this race which is not my favorite temperature to exert myself in these days. I felt like we were sprinting from the start and glanced at the Garmin to see our pace was a freaking 8 minute mile for the first mile. NOT COOL. I slowed us down just a bit after that and then by 2 miles I just told Nate to go on ahead of me. He did, which sort of ticked me off, but I was also secretly happy that I could slow down and remember how to breathe---but my pace was still under a 9 minute mile and thus my legs were pretty unhappy with me.

As per my Garmin I finished in 26:46 which is a 8:41 minute/mile pace and probably just as fast as I would have done pre-Truman. I really did feel like vomiting afterward but within a few minutes I was happy again. I was even happier when we got to have an ice cold brew and fabulous food at a local restaurant with friends after that.

IMG_0798

Oh, and I've been meaning to post about my new running shoes that I am completely obsessed with but obviously, posting about running hasn't been my top priority (and now it's all spilling out like old times!). Nate has a new-found love for forefoot running and I totally mocked him for it in the beginning. It just sounded like a lot of effort to re-learn the mechanics of running and I didn't want to deal with it. He got Newtons and was in love and I resisted until recently. I realized that in the time that my husband had purchased FOUR pair of running shoes I myself had the exact same ones from a year and a half ago. That is so not okay and it was time I splurged on myself. I ended up buying Newtons and so far I really do like them a lot although the company is right when they say it takes a few weeks to really get used to the new format of shoe stability. I was trying the forefoot running in my old shoes for awhile but it's a lot easier when the shoe is built to assist that pattern, plus I like the bold colors (go figure!). So anyway, here are my new shoes. The funniest part of this pic is the giant blob of baby puke next to my foot that I didn't notice until I uploaded this pic. Whoops!
IMG_0803

Although hard core runners are not supposed to care about colors and outfits and whatnot, don't they look nice with my neon yellow top? And why are my boobs so freaking big all the time, even in a sports bra. It's difficult to dress this new body, I swear.
IMG_0805

I'm not totally committing to this yet, but I've been seriously considering signing up for a half marathon this fall. I have absolutely no clue when I'll find the time to train for it as a working mom but maybe just running on my Wednesdays off and both weekend days could possibly be enough. I just hate to commit to something that I can't give 100% toward so I'm dragging my feet but we'll see. Being a running mom is certainly a lot more challenging than I thought. Oh the luxury of running for hours each day without a though to engorged boobs, a crying baby, and sleep deprivation. I'll figure it out soon enough.

3. Tomorrow is Nate's first Fathers Day and Truman made him his first craft at daycare! I found this card in his bag when I picked him up and almost cried right then and there. Nate loved it and promptly hung the card on the fridge (he never does things like that without me cueing him to do so) and then snuggled with T a little bit more than normal that evening. It's seriously adorable. The poem on the front is about being a dad to a baby and how you should hold onto this feeling for life. The inside picture totally cracks me up and I love that T signed it for Nate, too. I think that pic might be from his first day at daycare and I just adore his confused expression. What a talented crafter, right?
IMG_0796

IMG_0795

I will definitely call my own dad tomorrow and I think we are making a big dinner for Nate and Tony tomorrow, too. But I should mention that I feel incredibly blessed to see Nate be the amazing dad that I knew he'd be to our son. My own dad isn't too shabby either and I count him as another important blessing in my life.

So that's that...a little bit of randomness and a lot of running talk--oh how I missed it!

Isla Mujeres Trip 2015 Day 1

I really want to recap our amazing/magical/perfect/want-to-go-back-immediately trip to Mexico, even though I am sure these posts will be a major undertaking and not terribly 'popular' for the general public. But I took tons of pictures (shocking!!) and want to relive the memories, so here goes nothing.

Last Memorial Day weekend, Erin and Ben visited us from Minnesota. One of the things on our agenda for that weekend was 'Convince Ben to Agree Upon a Tropical, Winter Vacation.' Erin and I had been emailing about this dream of going on a trip to somewhere with a beach, hot weather, and without our beloved children (i.e. NO RESPONSIBILITIES, ultimate relaxation possible). We somehow succeeded at convincing Ben and Nate was already all over the idea. But of course, I was still quite pregnant with Porter and we wanted to wait until he was born to make the trip officially official. I admit, the idea of leaving my then unborn baby when he would be approximately eight months, along with his two older siblings seemed like it would be a monumental feat. I've only been away from Truman maybe a total of 6 nights ever in his five years of life, away from Cecelia just 2 nights that I can recall, and I dreaded the idea of pumping for the entire trip while away from baby Porter (ha, no worries, Julia of last year!). But I knew that if this winter was anything like last winter, we would be in serious need of a kid-free vacation to warmer weather. And so I started talking myself up to be brave, leave the children for a few nights with very capable and willing grandparents, and enjoy the heck out of our time away.

My requests for the trip: 1. To be towards the end of winter, to allow for Porter to be as 'old' as possible and hopefully sleeping through the night (yes, good call, CHECK). 2. Somewhere with a beach and HOT weather, not likely to be raining constantly. 3. Direct flight from Milwaukee (not quite achieved, but still okay). We considered Florida but the weather isn't always a guarantee for 80+ temps and very little rain. We figured Mexico would be a great option and one that is relatively inexpensive when compared to islands in the Caribbean. Nate really wanted to stay on the Gulf/Caribbean side if possible because he thinks the beaches are nicer compared to the Pacific side. We didn't want to do an All-Inclusive because we wanted to eat at different restaurants and explore a little more than feeling restricted to one resort. Erin did all of the planning and research for the trip, and found us a privately owned condo on the island of Isla Mujeres, which is a 20 minute ferry ride from Cancun, Mexico. YES, PLEASE. It ended up being the perfect location, perfect weather, and easy travel. Really, truly, magical.

We booked our Nautibeach condo in September and got plane tickets shortly thereafter. Unfortunately, Milwaukee didn't have any direct flights to Cancun except for on Tuesdays and Saturdays, so we ended up flying in and out of Chicago, Midway. Not a huge deal since we drove the two hours down there the night before our early morning flight, and stayed in a cheap hotel near the airport. Definitely worth it to have a direct flight!

On Wednesday, March 11 my mom flew in from Colorado around 2pm. My dad was also supposed to come but he had the flu and ended up staying home miserable, and muttering truths like 'I NEVER get sick' while wishing he was a part of the babysitting crew. Tony and Lois were also very active parts of childcare while we were gone, so three grandparents to three children ended up being a very good ratio of adults to kids;) Mom got in that afternoon, we ate dinner, Nate got home from work, we put the kids to bed, and then Nate and I immediately drove to Chicago. So I didn't get to see mom much before we left, but I did manage to type up a four page instruction sheet to make me feel better about someone else being in charge of my children for days on end;) #controlfreak #leavingthreekidsishard #don'trockthebabytosleepPLEASE

DAY ONE: Thursday, March 12

Our flight was at 7:00 am, so we woke up at (the ungodly time of) 4:00 am in our hotel room by the airport, parked our car in one of the economy lots (only $15 per day, I thought it would have been a lot more expensive!), and blew through ticketing and security in no time. The morning was so early and I was kind of nervous/amped up about the trip, and I didn't feel all that great. I'm sure I was also overanalyzing every breath since I knew my mom had been exposed to my dad, who was pretty sick. I was extra worried about one of the kids getting sick while we were gone, or mom coming down with whatever dad had---mostly I was a head case about any and all germs. After our McDonalds breakfast, some coffee, and boarding the plane to paradise I somehow pulled through and felt much better once we were on our way to this vacation we had been planning for almost a year!

The flight was four hours long but it went by really quickly with Southwest's free TV, my laptop for working on Porter's eight month post, and a bit of the book I downloaded for Lois' Kindle (Maine by J. Courtney Sullivan---haven't read a book in years, and didn't even finish this one but it's good so far!). We landed, went through customs and got our checked bags, and walked to the end of the airport when we saw Ben and Erin. We were outside at this point and it was ridiculously hot and humid, which was much appreciated because we weren't in Wisconsin anymore, baby! Ben and Nate had a beer or two from the vendor outside of the airport while Erin and I had some water and we all discussed the logistics of getting to our condo. Erin and Ben had already reserved a shuttle from the airport to the ferry dock, so we found our driver and took in the scenes of Cancun while riding to the ferry. Once we got there (about 20 minutes or so), we saw that there was a fairly large line to get onto the ferry itself. But seeing the ocean and palm trees and feeling the sun on our skin made it seem like this was a real vacation instead of something we had just been talking about for so long.

IMG_2989

I had to change clothes because I was dying in my yoga pants, hoodie and tennis shoes, the guys got some food, and us girls chugged more bottled water. We ended up getting onto the boat about an hour after we arrived to the ferry, and we were all pretty thrilled with the color of the ocean water. And our rock guitarist on the 20 minute ferry ride;)

We're on a boat!
IMG_2995

We then walked from the ferry to our condo and I think we were all dripping in sweat at this point, extra-excited for the pool and ocean. The guys walked to the grocery store and apparently came back with many very heavy groceries that must have been a sight to see, as they hauled them back to our condo. Erin and I changed and went right to the beach. Snapped a selfie on the beach to mark the true beginning of vacation;)
All Photos-202

Then we noted a small group of loud, topless girls in the water, shaking their coconuts and causing us to wonder if spring breakers *would*, in fact, be on our island and not just Cancun! Alas, we did not see anymore partiers the entire trip, and instead noticed many families with small children. I don't actually think there were too many kids at our resort but of course, like typical moms, we seemed to notice every single one of the little babes. Occasionally one of them would make me miss my own offspring until they began to melt down, cry, and give their parents general hell while vacationing. At that point I would simply take another sip of my adult beverage and soak in the non-parenting moments of our childless vacation. Love you kids! But mommy and daddy need time away sometimes, too.

Erin observing the once-topless girls who reapplied their bikini tops prior to this picture. Ah, different seasons of life.

The guys came back from the store and we all hung out at the pool for a bit. The flotation devices were KEY for maximal relaxation. I accidentally popped one of these babies with a stray bobby pin, too. Whoops!

Many-a-foot shots were taken on this trip. Be warned.

We attempted to find WiFi immediately upon stepping into our resort, but we quickly realized that the best signal would be on the patio of our condo. For internet junkies like us, this was a prominent location for out trip! (None of us took a single picture of the inside of our condo, but trust me when I say it was delightful).

Beloved patio of Internetting:

Then we Face-timed with the kids...

...got showered, and went out to dinner. Oh, and the boys and I began our love affairs with Pina Coladas before we left for dinner. Somehow they were able to concoct the most delicious, frozen, fruity drink ever and we may or may not have gone through nearly three bottles of rum during the trip. I blame that on the men for 80% of the consumption though. Poor Erin and her non-alcoholic vacation. We drank in her honor, obviously.

Had to take a few 'dressed up for dinner' pictures on the beach. Erin's belly is truly this adorable in person, FYI.

We walked around the main street of Isla Mujeres (called Hidalgo Ave apparently, did not know this until I just read Erin's blog post about our first day) and eventually decided to eat at Lola Valentina for dinner. We started with guacamole and decided we would have to taste test guac at every dinner, and we were always quite satisfied with each version, every night. My pineapple ginger margarita and my flautas were both awesome for dinner. I like to think I'm fairly easy to please with food but I do not like anything remotely spicy, which can be a bit challenging in Mexico. But I avoided any of the burning-mouth-panicky sensations and found many tasty alternatives to breathing fire. Such as: badass margaritas.
Lola Valentina: pineapple ginger margarita

And my 'flautas', I think there was chicken inside--not totally sure.
Flautas

After dinner we walked home and hung out on the beach briefly before retiring to bed at an impressive 9:30pm. It was a long day of travel and we were all beat, so luckily our king sized beds turned out to be ridiculously comfortable. Although Porter is now sleeping through the night, getting uninterrupted sleep on a kid-free vacation was still especially wonderful. Because everything on vacation is wonderful, right?

Mothers Day 2013

We had a lovely Mother's Day weekend. Saturday the girls and I went to a lovely tea that was put on by some of the Kindergarten Mom's at Kate's school.

The tea was adorable. I am trying to convince one of my girls to have a Tea Party Birthday Party!
We got our picture taken & they made these adorable frames at the tea party for Mother's Day.

On Sunday, I was woken up to Claire screaming her head off & crying. She wanted Kevin.
But, Kevin (and Kate) had gone to get me a vanilla latte, donuts & flowers.
Claire finally snapped out of it when she saw donuts.
I enjoyed my donut & coffee in bed :)
The 2 dozen roses they gave me. Gorgeous.

Kevin, vacuuming the couch. What a guy!

They sent me out of the house (in Kevin's car) so that Kevin could wash & clean out my car.
I enjoyed a quiet trip to Target (by myself!!!) and I also went and got a mani/pedi.
So relaxing, so thankful for my awesome husband giving me the day "off"
After I got home it was time to get ready for our Mother's Day Dinner.
Because we live within 5 minutes of our parents & siblings (So blessed!), we decided to host Mother's Day Dinner at our house. That way, we could celebrate Mother's Day with BOTH of our Mom's and not run around all day splitting up time between our families.
We are also extremely blessed that my parents and Kevin's parents get along fabulously.
Our parents, chilling poolside with Luke:

The weather was gorgeous so we had the entire get together outside so the kids could swim.
My sisters brought the appetizers.

And, the cards they made me? Covered in Fall Decorations because they know Fall is my FAVORITE and that I LOVE FALL.

This card? Made me tear up.

Love what Kate made at school. That's ME! :)
Look what my sister in law made my my mother law? I want it!
