beauty faves minimalist makeup routine

while that little collage of my favorite beauty products is b u s y up there, really this is the simplest make routine I have found myself in since.. well ever.  when the twins were really young I still made time for getting myself ready and out the door- I was late about half the time, but I was pretty put together for the most part. when Baker was born, and actually this started when I was pregnant and exhausted, it was a success for me to have just been able to fix my hair.. not even wash it, just get it out of the hair-tie mess on top of my head, let alone put on makeup!  I was busy getting myself and three kids ready for whatever and I was always last on my list for being completely put together.  I cant tell you how many times I have gone to church/dinner/work without makeup on or my hair in a topknot from the night before.  this is coming from a former "I cant go anywhere without having full face makeup and hair washed and dried ".  finally I have fallen into a routine that has me looking put together well enough and it takes me probably just about 15-20 minutes to get myself ready.
the base
I start with lotion containing SPF (I use R+F for my skin care) and then layer with benefit porefessional.  I got this as a sample- and they always get me.  after running out of the tiny bottle I immediately got myself a full size tube.  I follow this primer with tarte full coverage foundation.  I've used this foundation for a couple years and I really love it.  I'm not picky about my foundation makeup really, but I have to find one that doesn't clog my pores and actually lasts as long as it says it will.  lastly, I finish off my base look with concealer.. and another sample product I received.  I swear they know what they are doing when they hand out those tiny little samples..benefit fake up quickly has become my favorite concealer. this one boasts a crease-free formula, and it follows through with that claim with flying colors!
the brows
I've mentioned my new found love for the benefit eyebrow system, and if I don't do anything else aside from my base makeup- I always do my brows.  I never EVER messed with them before- mainly because I was clueless and a little intimidated as to how to achieve a more full look. I start with the gimme brow; brushing evenly over my brows.  I then line just under my brow line with the high brow pencil (I love this stuff!) and set my brows by brushing on the ready, set, brow setting gel. EASY and takes about 5 minutes or less.  serious.
the eyes
while we are talking about eyes.. kind of.. I can mention my go-to eye shadows.  I am a lover of MAC and urban decay- but LOVE L'Oreal's infallible eye shadow. I wear this shadow in Amber Rush almost everyday.  If I am not wear this, I've got urban decay snatch or sellout on my eyes.  since I have lashes, I don't wear mascara very often unless we are going out or taking pictures or I need a fill really bad:)  when I do wear mascara it has to be oil free as to not affect the lash glue, and so I use benefit BADgal lash.
the blush
I finish my look with my FAVORITE blush ever- urban decay afterglow.  I wear this blush in fetish- which is a warm coral color.  I always gravitate to the warmer colors for my olive skin.  they have a huge array of colors in these, so you can definitely find any color that you love!
the brush
I'm kind of a snob when it comes to my makeup brushes.  I have used the cheap ones.. and the brush hairs gets all in my makeup and stick to my face because they so easily fall out.  I make a splurge on new makeup brushes about once a year (hello, they are the perfect stocking stuffer!) and MAC is always my go-to for brushes. the three main types I use.. a powder blush brush, and foundation brush, and my favorite and super tiny angle brush. I shop at utla A LOT, and I found a great brush cleanser by IT cosmetics that I use about once a week.  it doesn't take much and the bottle lasts forever.  I haven't tried this DIY recipe, but my favorite beauty blogger has a super easy tutorial to DIY your own brush cleanser HERE.  after you read that.. google her youtube tutorial on how to tease your hair.  it will change your life.
lips
at any given time I have about 4-5 glosses in my bag. I love lipgloss- and I have a lot and tried a lot.  my favorite right now?  buxom full-on lip polish.  I wear dolly (a mauve color) most often and for a little more color I wear Isabella, which is more of a plum color.

there we have it! easy and quick and with super minimal effort-  all good things in one sentence.  any quick beauty tips you got for me, I am all ears!

More Makeup

One of the reasons I wanted to start a blog was that I absolutely LOVE reading other women's blogs.  Fashion, beauty, decor, anything!  I felt since I was soaking up everyone else's amazing ideas I should give back and share some of my own.  At times it makes me feel super vulnerable putting myself out there (and by at times I mean all the time), but then I think that if I never tried, I would maybe look back and regret not attempting this little blog.

So onward I go!  My first Makeup post is still one of my most viewed (totally because it was linked by Iowa Girl Eats - love you Kristin!) and the Makeup Additions also received quite a bit of attention.  I thought I should keep going with some more makeup posts!

I haven't always used an eyelash curler, but in the past year I have been converted.  I NEVER use the curler on lashes that already have mascara on - that is a great way for you to rip out your lashes.  But pre-mascara, they can give a nice curl to lashes that will really open your eyes!  My SIL got me the Shseido curler for Christmas and I really like it!  I'm not sure I am knowledgeable enough in curlers to know a difference between the cheap ones and more expensive ones, but I do enjoy it!

Shut the front door, I am obsessed with this amazing dupe!  Pale Pink Bobbi Brown = Elf Pink Passion.  I know in this photo they look different, but on the cheeks (face, people) they are both perfection!  I will probably still get my Pale Pink Bobbi Brown color just because I love it so, but the Elf Pink Passion is perfect for everyday use since it is $3!

One of my girlfriends works at Sigma Beauty, and I became hooked on their brushes!  My newest addition is the P80.  I'm still learning all my favorite uses for it, but currently I love using this to finish blending in concealer after dabbing with my fingers.

Speaking of brushes, cleaning them is a necessary evil.  I use the Mac brush cleanser to soak my brushes for a few minutes, then I use a gentle shampoo in my hand to get the last bits out of the brushes.  I try and clean my brushes at least once a month.  There are so many germs hiding in brushes.  If you haven't cleaned your brushes recently, do your skin a favor and go wash them right now.

So dirty!
During

After!

I know I have mentioned them before, but I just LOVE MMandLShow!  Here is my all time favorite video.  I loved Michelle Money on the Bachelor (was I the only one that could see her humor and not think she was a psycho?).  Her style, makeup, hair, everything was always perfection and my highlight of the show!  Screw the fake relationship - show me the (Michelle) Money! :)  I am also OBSESSING over this new Spring Makeup tutorial they posted.  So gorgeous!

Thank you so much for reading!  I am very excited to see that I hit 50,000 all time views!  I know in blog land that is nothing, but since this is only a few months old it makes me excited.  Here's to 50,000 more! :)

Anyone have any new Spring makeup finds you cannot live without?

Makeup Additions

Some other hints or things I forgot on my original makeup post!  My makeup is always changing.  These are things I currently use (and some have used for quite a while) but if I find something else that I prefer, coloring/season changes, etc., then I am not afraid to switch it up!  And I love watching the MMandLShow and have purchased/tried a lot of the things they mention!

MMandLShow

First and foremost, in my first makeup post I didn't list that I ALWAYS use an eyeshadow primer.  Eyes have oils and it is totally pointless to put on any sort of shadow without a primer first.  I literally will not put shadow on if I forgot/ran out of primer.  Two that I love are Nyx in Skintone (been using this one the most - like concealer for your eyelids!) and Urban Decay.

I also forgot to list that when I go all out (like on family picture day) I use Jane Iredale black pencil in my water line.  It glides so nicely!  I don't use pencil eyeliner otherwise, because it spreads, tugs on eyes, and never stays where it is supposed to.  Or I will touch my face and smudge it - never a good look.

If you need a good sharpener for the Brow Duality (and for anything else) I love the Nars sharpener.  Well worth $6.

I love the Bobbi Brown bronzer, however I do not use it everyday.  Too pricey!  Bronzers and concealers are two things that I love to purchase and try out as well, so I have a few options.  I have been using the Rimmel Natural Bronzer and it is ok, not sure I will buy again. But works for everyday.  I do love the Sephora bronzer/blush duo.  I don't see it on their store right now but looks similar to this (just missing the blush half).

I cannot survive without using eye cream every morning and night after washing my face.  I have pretty dry skin and I swear the Dermalogica eye cream is like a dam for wrinkles.  Hold 'em back!  I am not afraid of wrinkles (especially smile wrinkles - those make me happy because it means the wearer of the wrinkles is a happy person!) but am a believer of hydration of all kinds.  But skincare could be a whole other post!

Another important beauty must for pictures - a spray tan!  The combination of a spray tan, the Loreal True Match and Laura Gellar Balance and Brighten I mentioned is amazing!  I know this isn't practical for everyday, but for pictures it is necessary.  Camera flash makes EVERYONE look pale, bring out eye bags, etc., and a spray tan minimizes that.  NO BED TANNING!  Too dangerous!

Something I am working on finding is a makeup desk chair (I like having a chair back) and also better lighting.  Our bedroom is SO dark and is difficult to do accurate makeup!  I do love the desk, though.  This has helped immensely!

Lastly, having shaped eyebrows is huge!  You can have the most amazing makeup in the world but if your brows are a hot mess, the makeup isn't going to do anything!  I have always loved great eyebrows and have struggled with mine for a long time.  In the last few years I have been going every six weeks religiously (always schedule before you leave!!) to have them shaped by Kelly at Brogan Skinworks and my brows have never looked better.  We are still working them into their shape but man, she is a brow whisperer!  If you are in the Twin Cities, you need to go see her.  And get a Brazilian while you are there!  :)

I'm sure I am missing more, this will be an ongoing discussion!
