Preschool Theme Dinosaurs

A couple weeks ago the kids loved my Dinosaur themed Mother's Morning Out preschool.
I really enjoyed planning all their songs and activities too. Something about dinosaurs brings out the geology nerd in me. I almost majored in geology in college, with the intent of being a volcanologist or an archaeologist.
Dinosaurs, volcanoes, rocks, and dirt all go together!

Anyways, the kids had a blast, so I thought I'd share some of the songs and activities we enjoyed.

Dinosaurs All Around - Sung to "If You're Happy And You Know It"

There are dinosaurs stomping, all around.
There are dinosaurs stomping, all around.
There are dinosaurs all around, stomping on the ground.
There are dinosaurs stomping, all around.

Continue with additional verses of:
There are dinosaurs flying all around.
There are dinosaurs swimming all around.
There are dinosaurs eating all around.
Song found here.

I made this next song into an activity. I cut out a paper plate to look like dinosaur teeth, inspired by this pin, and then at the end of the song I chose one child to pretend "eat." Each child took a turn being the dinosaur, snapping the dinosaur teeth, and "eating" someone.

The Dino Ditty - Sung to "Do Wah Diddy"

Here he comes just a stomping with his feet
Singing Dino, dino, ditty-dum, ditty dee
Searching all around for something to eat
Singing Dino, dino, ditty dum, ditty dee
He's huge (echo). He's strong (echo) He's huge, he's strong.
Wont be hungry very long.
Song found here.

The kids also enjoyed some free time play with miniature dinosaurs, and then we used those dinosaurs to make salt dough fossils. Find instructions here. When the salt dough fossils were dry, the kids colored them with markers.

One of the dinosaurs fossils the kids made.

And of course we played with stickers and paper! Preschool kids love stickers and colors!

In these pictures they were supposed to draw land, sea, and air and then place the dinosaurs in their appropriate habitats. We had just discussed where dinosaurs lived. . . and luckily the kids got their pictures mostly right.

The kids were so smart at matching the dinosaurs to their habitats based on physical characteristics.

I'm glad there are so many resources for dinosaur themed preschool. Visit your local library for books too. I get all my preschool books at our library. I think it's the easiest way to stock up for a theme, and then I can take them all back when it's time to plan for the next activity.
