Laundry I need tips!

I have never had a good system for doing laundry.
It has always been my Achilles heel.
I dread laundry....especially folding it'1
Folding laundry is my least favorite household chore (along with unloading the dishwasher)
I've never had a good system for laundry....I  love doing meal plans every Sunday, I love cooking (and cook 6 nights a week), I love throwing parties and all the planning & prep that goes into parties, but laundry? Laundry is were I fail. I don't like doing it, so I avoid it!
Avoiding it is never a good idea because then the next thing you know, I have 5-6 loads of laundry that needs to get done on the weekend because no one has any clean clothes to wear.
So that has been my laundry "system" for the past 10 years....I save all the laundry up for the weekend and then I end up doing a ton of loads at a time.
We only have a couple more days of school left (YES!!!), so this summer (starting next week) I want to figure out a laundry system & I would LOVE your advice!

I would love to hear how you manage your laundry.
Do you do a load everyday?
Do you make your kids help you fold (I have started having the girls help me fold but they don't like to fold either) I do make the girls put away their clean laundry. We've been doing that since they were 5 and 7
Do you start your laundry in the morning and then fold at night?
Leave your tips and suggestions in the comments below.
Or are you like me and are a laundry avoider?
What works/doesn't work for you?

10 Movies I love watching during Christmas

Once Thanksgiving is over, I am in full Christmas mode and Kevin & I watch Christmas movies almost every night.
Some of my favorite movies to watch are Hallmark Christmas movies. They are so cheesy, but I just love them!!!
If I'm not watching a Hallmark Christmas movie, then I am watching one of these Christmas movies (we own all of these DVD's)
Here are 10 movies that I love watching during the Christmas season:
(I've linked all the DVD's...all of them are under $10 and free 2 day shipping!)

10. Polar Express (I love this movie & own it, but our girls haven't seen it yet)

9. The Family Stone (Dysfunctional Christmas.....fun cast)

8. Frosty the Snowman (this was my FAVORITE Christmas cartoon as a kid, now my girls love it as well)

7. The Grinch (Jim Carrey version)

6. The Family Man (We watch this every Thanksgiving night to kick off the Christmas season)

5. Serendipity (This movie started my love affair with NYC during Christmas. I NEED to go to NYC during Christmas. My sisters & I did go to the actual Serendipity 10 years ago when we did 9-11 relief and we got the famous Frozen Hot Chocolate. So good. Want to go back!)

4. A Christmas Story (This plays 24 hours all night long on Christmas Eve & Christmas Day. Every Christmas Eve night, we keep the TV on in our room so that we can watch it, even in the middle of the night.)

3. Home Alone & Home Alone 2
I LOVE both of these. They are a Christmas staple. I watch them EVERY SINGLE December.

 2. Elf....Such a great movie. It was almost my number 1. So many great lines in this movie.

1. Chevy Chase's Christmas Vacation
This is my favorite Christmas movie. It never gets old. I laugh every time.
So, there you have it. My top 10 movies that I love watching during the Christmas season.
Not on my list include all the made for TV Christmas movies that I have DVR'd from the Lifetime/Hallmark/ABC Family channels. That deserves it's own post. Ha!
I LOVE the cheesy Lifetime/Hallmark movies...as soon as December 1st hits, I start filling up our DVR with cheesy Christmas movies...the cheesier the better!

Are there any movies that I don't have on my list that I should? I would love to hear your favorites!

And, thanks to everyone who has linked up for the cookie exchange!
So many yummy recipes! Go check them out if you haven't already & leave a comment there to be entered in the cookbook giveaway!

I immediately regret this decision

Boys and girls, today you shall hear a story about poor decisions that eventually turned into a good laugh, but at the time were completely traumatizing. But before that plot unfolds let's look at my handsome son sporting a mohawk from an envious daddy. :)

IMG_1188

IMG_1181

IMG_1156

Okay, moving on.

Truman and I flew to Missouri last weekend because my dad had a total hip replacement surgery and I wanted to be there as the one healthcare person in the family (more later). I knew that flying alone with a one year old could potentially cause me to lose my frickin mind but I had to chance it. Nate could not join us because of that pesky 'work/school' stuff. The flight to Missouri was a cake walk because we got upgraded to the very front row---something about extra masks on the other side of the plane so our original seats just would not do? Truman could spread out into his own empty seat next to me and he was a total doll that time around. See?
IMG_1194

IMG_0042

But the return flight home? Horrid. I'm still exhausted from that little 47 minute trip and vow that I will not fly alone with Truman if I can feasibly avoid it. We boarded the plane and instantly knew that it was a packed flight without the luxury of front row wiggle room this time---I guess I picked the 'right' side for this one, so no seat change for us. As soon as we plopped down Truman turned into a whirling dervish and as his energy level multiplied mine divided. We had a very nice college girl next to us who was understanding of my little heartbreaker's need to touch her sweater, then hair, then nose. Of course, the couple behind us was not spared by his charm as he peeked over the top of my seat multiple times to point and reach and smile like it was his job. 'He's not shy at all, is he?' the woman asked. 'Um, no. Apparently not,' I replied while Truman began to shout 'DA-DA' at the top of his lungs, gesturing to each and every male occupant on the flight. Great. Now my son has about 50 baby daddies according to him, and although everyone just melted over the cuteness of Truman I knew I was in for the long haul.

As soon as we took off I smelled It. 'It' being the most horribly rancid poop of the century wafting out of my entertaining boy's diaper. Perfect timing, of course. I tried to ignore it but the stench was making me a paranoid mama, wondering if all Truman's new found buddies would cast him aside for being the stinky, white-trash kid who poops his pants and sits in it for too long. I glanced around nervously to see if anyone was plugging their nose yet and decided that a trip to the plane bathroom was simply unavoidable. I couldn't stand it any longer so I grabbed a diaper and some wipes and bumper car'd our way back to the 'bathroom'. I swear to you I got the evil eye from the passenger next to the room as if to say, 'You aren't really going to try THAT, are you?' Oh yes. I was.

We stepped into the stall and I'm pretty sure the walls started closing in on us both. Or maybe that was just because it was the tiniest bathroom known to mankind and my arms were practically pinned to my side. I was a determined woman at this point and decided just to peek into the diaper-of-despair to assess the damage before I committed to the ordeal. I put the toilet lid down and took a seat, laying my slippery one year old on my lap as if he was a newborn (ha!). As soon as I pulled the diaper to the side I knew I had to remove the abomination from his skin or else I would certainly be guilty of child neglect. That thing was simply taking over his backside and it must.go.now.

And so, I took a deep breath and began the removal process. As soon as I got the battered diaper off Truman decided enough was enough and simply could not remain on my lap any longer---and I really don't blame him since his head was hanging off my knees and his neck was bent backwards rushing the blood to his little brain. I tried to hurry and wipe his caked crack but failed and had to surrender to his need to stand up on my lap. I'm guessing this is about the time that the poop particles rubbed against my shirt sleeve but I cannot remember the details because all I could think about was how I should not have done this at all.

'I immediately regret this decision' was seriously something I said out loud. Then I started to sweat and almost started crying as I pictured my crap-covered son returning to his seat without any diaper or pants on his little body because his mom just couldn't handle the pressure in the miniature bathroom on the plane. As I stared into Truman's adorable but poopy butt crack I knew I had to buck up and get the job done. I started to wipe as much out of the crack as I could and returned him to my lap, promising him one million dollars if he'd just sit still for mama one more time.

I unraveled toilet paper and generously offered him limitless amounts for entertainment. I started singing some deranged song hoping to calm the little poop monster. And finally once I had him semi-wiped down I allowed him to return to standing on my lap and applied a new diaper as best I could. Putting on a clean diaper while a baby is standing up on your lap, and your arms cannot move more than 2 inches to the side without banging into airplane walls is pretty much the crown jewel of motherhood if you ask me. I have walked through fire and survived and therefore I can embrace my title of 'mommy' from here on out.

After I snapped together his onesie and wrangled his pants back on, I doused my hands in sanitizer and walked through that teeny folding door with my head held high. Sure, we were in there for about 20 minutes, I looked like a tornado struck my face, and now I smelled like poop since it was smeared on my shirt but whatever. At least my baby didn't have a poopy butt and could return to his friends without the 'dirty kid' persona.

I intercepted him from licking every single surface on the plane (ooh, look! a germ-infested arm rest! Must eat now!) in order to prevent an outbreak of rabies in our home and can only hope that he didn't ingest a major debilitating disease despite my efforts. At the end of the flight I stopped swiping his hands with sani-wipes every minute and admitted defeat. There's only so much energy one mom can carry, you know?

When we finally landed I praised God for letting us survive. I informed Nate of our little bathroom escapade and explained that if he smelled a rancid stench, it must be my shirt. Then I promptly showered as soon as we entered our home and tried to scrub away the poo and the plane and sweat on my brow.

Flying alone with a one year old is no freaking joke. And never, ever attempt to change a dirty diaper in a plane bathroom. Lesson learned.

So the trip itself was a success: dad did fabulous in surgery and also in therapy at the hospital. I had to snap at least one pic of him with his PT---a kindred soul of mine and of course we traded PT stories like old chums by the end of dad's stay.
IMG_1213

I helped him get settled in at home and he was a 'fair' patient of mine. A little non-compliant at times, always pushing the rules, but at least he was feeling good enough to give me trouble!
IMG_1302

He is recovering even better than I expected and I'm sure he will continue to feel better and better with time. I know it's going to be hard for him to stay off the golf course until the doc clears him in about 4-6 weeks but I hope he follows orders----or his PT daughter will be back down there to kick his rear in gear! I'm sure mom can handle him from this point on, though. She was happy I was there to help ease them into the recovery process and I'm so glad we could make the trip, too.

Memaw and Pepaw came to visit a bit and T got even more spoiled with his great-grandparents there.
IMG_1277

He was obsessed with my parents' TV, DVD player, and cable box. And with his knee socks. :)
IMG_1231

Probably my new favorite picture ever. Note the dimple and the teeth. Cannot.stand.it!
IMG_1433

New favorite hobby = the touchdown sign! :)
IMG_1382

Peace, dudes.
IMG_1347

Loves his grandma.
IMG_1413

And is also very dramatic with his facial expressions.
IMG_1357
So that is that. A great trip despite the eventful flight home. You have to learn as you go, I suppose!

Anyone else ever changed a baby in a plane bathroom? If so, you are my hero.

Side note: I am starting a new job tomorrow so wish me luck! Same stuff but a different company and I'm a little nervous for some reason. It will probably just be three days per week although I stayed on with my previous employer for my half day on Thursdays, too. Ideally if I could drop that half day and just do three days in a week I think I'd be completely satisfied with my career/mommy balance in life so we'll see how this works out. Either way, it's nice to have options in this economy and I really do enjoy my career part of life. End of side note. Carry on.

I was the best Mom ever Then I had kids

I have been reflecting a lot lately since Luke was born over a year ago & thinking about how much my mothering has changed since I had him compared to when I was a first time mom with Kate.
Then I started thinking about how my parenting has changed since before I had Kate, when I had no kids.
Because before I had my own kids, I was the best Mom EVER.
I wasn't a mom myself yet, but let me tell you, in my silently judging mind, I was the best.

Oh, how funny that is to think back on in my carefree, childless days.
I had NO clue. No clue, I tell you.
It's hard being a mom. Sooooooo hard.
Harder than I ever, ever thought it would be.
And, when you don't have kids of your own it is easy to judge and say to yourself,
"When I'm a Mom, there is NO WAY I would do that (or let my kids do that)"

Let's take a look at the Top 10 things I said *I* would never do when I had kids.

1. Wear Pajamas/Costumes in public
I remember before having kids I would see kids at the store & they were wearing costumes (and it wasn't Halloween) or they were wearing pajamas!! Oh, the horror! I couldn't believe that their parents let them out of the house like that and took them to the store in a costume or pajamas! Then, I had my own kids and realized that sometimes it's just not worth the battle. Claire went through a phase when she was 2 and thought she was Belle. She literally wore her Belle dress every single day during the summer of 2010. And sometimes, I let her wear it when we went out on errands. It just wasn't worth the battle.

2. Watch TV before they were 2 years old
I said I would NEVER let my kids watch TV before they were 2.  Then I got pregnant with Claire when Kate was 11 months old. Like all my pregnancies, I had 24/7 all day morning sickness. Soooo many times I would strap Kate into her high chair, toss some cheerios on the tray, wheel her high chair in front of the TV, turn on Sesame Street and then go puke in the bathroom. Good times, I tell you, good times. Sesame Street saved me during those times.
3. My kids won't be picky eaters.
I always said they will eat a variety of foods and I will make sure they have vegetables each day.
I never understood why some kids were picky eaters. I am not a picky eater and neither is Kevin.  Surely our kids wouldn't be picky....

HA!
Boy was I wrong. Our girls are so, so, picky.
They have gotten better over the past year, but they are still picky and rarely eat what we eat for dinner, so I make them different meals pretty much EVERY.SINGLE.NIGHT.
I know this is a bad habit, but they were so low on the weight percentage (and still are) that I just wanted them to eat, so when they refused our meals, I would make them something different.
Ugh.

4. Wear mismatched clothes and/or character clothing
Let me be honest here, I despise character clothing. Not my thing. At all.
I said I would never, ever buy that stuff for my kids.
My girls would always beg for the Princess/Hello Kitty/Minnie Mouse shirts at Target & I would always say no. I finally gave in a couple years ago when Claire wanted to use a Target card she got for her birthday (Thanks, Kelly) on a Princess shirt. That shirt brought Claire SO much joy. I realized that it's okay to let your kids wear character clothing.
While Claire loves character clothing, Kate loves mismatched clothes. Stripes, polka dots, 5 shades of purple? She doesn't care. The more mix-matched the better. And, you know what? I have let it go! Just as long as she is dressed.
Pick your battles, that is my motto.

5. I won't let the TV/Ipad/Iphone be a babysitter for my kids
Again, rewind to when I was pregnant with Luke. Morning sickness 24-7. Soooo tired. Soooo sick. Teaching full time. Coming home and having two girls who were 3 & 5 and didn't nap anymore. They needed constant entertainment. Enter the TV and iPad. I am not kidding when I say that Luke's pregnancy was brought to you by the iPad. I let my girls play on it almost everyday after school so I could nap or barf. #Don'tJudge
6. Let my kid have a meltdown in public
Pre-kids, I would see kid throw fits in the grocery store or at Target and just think to myself
"These parents have NO control over their kids. I will NEVER let my kids do that"
Yeah. So naive of me.
My girls have had so many public meltdowns.
The most memorable one was 2 years ago in the check out line at Safeway and one of my students mom was in line behind us.
Good times, I tell you, Good times.
I'll never forget what my students mom said to me with loving eyes.
"Hang in there, you are a great mom. It happens to all of us"
Amen, sister. Amen.

7. Bribe my kids
I said I would never bribe my kids.
HAHAHAHA.

I pretty much bribe them on a weekly basis.
I bribe them when we go to the go grocery shopping so that they don't have meltdowns.
I bribed them this past weekend when we had our family photo shoot.
If you have ever done a family photo shoot, you know that bribery is necessary.
They got candy & a promise of a new toy if they cooperated.

8. Yell at my kids
I remember going to the Mom's group at our church when Claire was a baby & Kate was almost 2. There was a speaker & she was talking about how you need to have patience with your kids and not yell/get angry with them. My girls were so young and Kate barely talked. I couldn't imagine ever losing my patience with them. How could I ever get angry or loose patience with my kids?
HAHAHAHA. Wow. As my kids are older I resist the urge to yell on a daily basis.

9.  Let my kids have a pacifier after 12 months old.
I took away the girls pacifers when they were 12-13 months old.
Easy peasy. It was 1 or 2 rough nights, and then no big deal.
I didn't want them to have pacifiers longer than 1 year old.
Luke is now 15 months old and he still has his paci.
He only gets it in his crib.
I just can't take it away yet because he is such a good sleeper (12 hours a night) and I am scared that if I take the pacifier away, then it will ruin his great sleep habits.
But, I know the longer I wait, the more attached he will get to the pacifier and the harder it will be to get rid of it. Ahhhh!!!!
Decisions, decisions.

10. Take my kids out of school for a vacation in the middle of the school year
When I first started teaching, I would get so frustrated when parents would take their kids out of school for vacation in the middle of the school year. I mean, why couldn't they take their vacations during Summer, Thanksgiving, Christmas or Spring Break?!?!
Then, I had my own kids and realized that sometimes things come up and that you might need to take a trip or vacation during the school year. For example, in March, we had a wedding to attend on a Friday in Southern California and we decided that we better extend our trip and take the kids to Disneyland while we were down there. Yes, I missed 2 days of school & so did Kate. I said I would never do that, but you know what? YOLO. You only live once! Do what you gotta do.

Oh, I was so naive.
So, so, so naive about all these things before I was a mom.

Motherhood....It's all about survival.
And, being the best mom we can be to our kids.
And you?
If you are doing YOUR best, then you are the Best Mom Ever for your kids.
Here is an award, from me to you.
You are the Worlds Best Mom to Your kids.
Why? Because you are YOU and no one loves them like you do.

Since becoming a mother, I've realized I'm not the best mom EVER, but I'm the best mom I can be for *my* kids.
Each kid is different, even my 3 are SO different from one another.
Who I am to judge how you parent your kids?

Number one rule of parenting? Never say never.
Chances are, you'll end up doing it.
And, try not to judge other moms who may do things differently than you.
What have you said that you would NEVER let your kids do & then ended up letting them?

All I want for Christmas

Since Thanksgiving is officially over, I can fully commit myself to the Christmas season without feeling guilty. I always feel so bad for Turkey day, getting shunned for Christmas so early in the year.

But alas, Christmas is here. If you are in doubt just watch the news. Crazies out in full force at the malls starting at 12:01 this morning. People being trampled on the Wal-Mart floor all in the name of a cheap television. Ah, the American way:)

Anyway, I've been thinking a lot about my Christmas list this year, as I'm sure good ol' St. Nick is DYING to know what to buy me. Well everyone can stop holding their breath because I've formulated my ultimate list. A list to end all of my miniature lists, and while I made this list with realistic intentions it sort of got out of hand. Some of these items are 100% dream material, but who knows. It's like when we registered for our $600 vacuum assuming nobody would buy it for us, and guess who owns that stupendous Dyson now?! It's possible that one of my lurking blog readers is extremely wealthy and wants to shower me with frivolous gifts. Anything is possible, right?

Let's start with the little purchases and work our way up, shall we?

1. This book is full of awesome photography of dogs, specifically 'designer breeds' such as the cockapoo. I love photography and I love my dog [no matter what anyone says about designer breeds.] I found it on Slobber Space which is an adorable blog, btw.

2. I would like to get back into magazine subscriptions, without actually paying for them myself. Both Elle Decor and Martha Stewart Living would be great surprises in our new mailbox.
3. I feel like I deserve a massage. Not a half-assed 5 minute massage from my husband while he watches golf. A REAL luxurious massage, preferably at the really pricey spa and salon nearby.

4. My new found love, QVC.com, as some amazing fake diamond jewelry. I have Ame--who happens to have great style and you should check out her website---to thank for this discovery. In fact, I purchased a fake wedding set to wear to work so that my real diamonds can be spared the nastiness that is my job. I just couldn't stomach wearing my real set while dealing with bodily fluids, rubber gloves, load of soap and sanitizer, and constant bumps and bruises. It's quite the debate in our household [whether I should be wearing my real diamonds all the time] but for now I'm more comfortable wearing my Diamonique set from QVC. Maybe I will post my fake [blingtastic] set on here sometime if you'd like.

ANYWAY, I've never had real diamond earrings before and we can't exactly afford them now. Plus I'd probably be too paranoid to wear real ones anyway. QVC just so happens to make Diamonique earrings, just like my rings. They are all under $50 and range from 2 carats to 5 carats. I could be wrong but I think that means total weight, so a 2 carat set would actually be one carat per ear. I know, it's quite ridiculous but I think I can pull it off. Now I just have to decide between the princess cut, round cut, or asscher cut:5. I've always wanted a pair of classy tall boots. And every single year I try on about a million pair and they aren't quite right. Mostly because they heel is too high and I know I'll never wear them without feeling extremely self-conscious. So now that the flat boots are in, I think I'm ready to take the plunge. These are from J.Crew and are $200...which in J.Crew land is fairly reasonable. But we all know that J.Crew has morphed into the most overpriced store known to mankind, right?6. Here is the heavy-hitter, folks. I haven't even mentioned this one to my parents because I'm sure they'd laugh in my face. But here I am posting it because it seriously makes me drool: The Canon Digital Rebel XTi 10.1 MP. It would be a step above our little point and shoot camera, since it's a D-SLR. The problem is it's $700 on Amazon and that doesn't even include some of the nice lenses. Which can be an additional $1000. YIKES! But those who know me understand my love for photography. I mean, I was "that girl" in college who always took pictures of our friends. And now that I'm all grown up and mature, I'd even refrain from taking pictures at bars as I move onto pictures of our family and whatnot. Seriously, this camera is my dream.7. Other things I would appreciate: a few 2008 calendars [betchya I get two Cockapoo calendars again this year], a first time homeowners book...maybe the one for dummies, digital scrapbooking supplies [my new obsession], a scrapbook supply organizer, and money. You can't go wrong with cash, folks.

Nate keeps telling me that I need 'warmer clothes' for this approaching winter. I don't really know what that means. It's not like I run around in shorts and tank tops year round and I already own a few coats and sweaters. That suggestion kind of frightens me, actually. Like people up here stock up on rabbit fur hats and long underwear for the winter. But regardless, he keeps hinting that I need to consider warm clothes for my wish list. I just don't find that fun, how about you?
