Jinxed! My NEW New Years Resolution

I jinxed myself. It's true.

I normally don't believe in "jinxing" per se, but in this case it sort of feels like I did. Not more than 12 hours after I posted my last blog entry about looking forward to enjoying a boring and uneventful 2013 my little Starman, who had been suffering since Saturday with what I strongly suspected was the flu, had a bad asthma attack he couldn't recover from. I gave him his inhalers twice and was contemplating hauling out the nebulizer when it dawned on me I better take him in to urgent care, stat! Urgent care took a quick look at him and sent him straight to the ER and after two hours of observation and treatment he was getting worse instead of better so, we were transferred upstairs to a room. We have been here since. We are going on 36 hours in the hospital and I am not optimistic about going home quite yet.

To add to the drama of the already dramatic evening, on the way from urgent care to the ER a problem with my car that had been threatening to become an issue finally did.

For months our car has had this weird short in the electrical system where, when you go over a bump, all the dome lights snap on for a second. Then after a minute they snap back off. It is highly annoying, not to mention a safety issue when driving at night with the light snapping on and off all the time. We just added it to the list of broken things we will fix eventually (the lift gate pistons have been out for months and one of the power windows doesn't work in the other car). Unfortunately on the way to the ER I went over a bump on the highway and the lights snapped on....and never snapped off. The whole 15 minutes on the way to the hospital I drove with one hand over the front dome light so I could see where I was going. I pulled into the ER and unloaded Starman. I locked the doors and waited, and waited, and waited. The dome lights stayed on. I quickly loaded him back into the car, climbed in and played with the light settings a bit and then climbed back out. No luck. Now I am panicked about getting Starman into the building so he could be treated, so I pried open the dome light in the front disconnected the lights by prying them out with a pen, but was unsuccessful with getting the back dome off. Then I noticed the outside lights were on too. Unable to do anything else, I unloaded the baby, locked the car and went to check in. I told the lady at the ER that if people reported a vehicle matching my car's description with all the lights blazing not to worry. I would deal with it when I left.

The plan is for someone to come get us from the hospital when we finally get discharged and I will deal with car when I get to it. It is most likely in need of a jump start and then we will drive it straight to the mechanic. In the meantime, we had to arrange for someone to be at our house when our new washing machine is delivered today (our old one broke on Christmas Eve). If things happen in three's I should be golden now. Unexpected expenses: 3, Me: 0.

So much for a boring start to 2013

Starman is doing better. He feels much better but his oxygen levels still are concerning. Now that he is coming around though, he is busy traumatizing the nice nurses with his inquisitive and stubborn personality. I strongly suspect our day nurse yesterday probably went home and hit the bottle after my little man encouraged her to ever greater heights of creativity throughout the day in attempt to keep him from ripping off his sensors and oxygen tubes. I was pretty impressed as some of them were quite ingenious, but to no avail. Then, every time he ripped off his sensors his oxygen levels would crash and he would send the nurses scurrying through the door. I am pretty sure he thought it was hysterical. He also spent a long time attempting to climb out of his crib and found he could reach the nurse call button which he then pressed repeatedly. Adding to that, his less than charming 'roid rage directed primarily at the respiratory nurses coming to give him his nebulizer treatment, and I am fairly certain that the nurses, as cute as they say they find him, will secretly be relieved when we are finally discharged. His saving grace is that he is fond of flashing his famous toothy smile at them in random moments of disarming charm. (I will definitely have to keep a close eye on that one when he gets old enough to notice girls).

So, I am looking forward to going home. And next time I write, I will not celebrate the mundane. I will accept that my life is a roller coaster. I seem to attract craziness and Murphy's law-type shenanigans like a magnet, so my NEW New Year's resolution is this; I promise to embrace my crazy life with grace and dignity. I accept that normal and boring do not exist for me and I will no longer covet them. I will strive to maintain patience in the midst of the craziest scenarios and remind myself to be grateful that somehow, no matter how crazy things get, they always seem to work out for the best in the end.

April 23 My childhood vs My childrens childhood Part One

Another topic from a commenter:

"Here's an idea for you (that may take more thought than you want to put in), but maybe a post about how your kids' childhoods are/will be different than yours, and feelings on that? I've been thinking that over a lot lately and since I don't blog, I'm passing the idea to you :). I grew up in a rural area with a SAHM; my son is a city kid with two full-time working parents. As he gets older, I'm realizing there are some idealizations of my childhood that I have to let go of, and also some really amazing experiences my kid will get that I never had access to. Maybe that's way too deep ... but an idea. Pictures are totally fine too :)"

I find this to be an interesting comparison and one that I haven't specifically pondered until this comment. My initial reaction was that my upbringing and also my kids' upbringings will be quite similar, which is a subconcious goal of mine since I had a wonderful childhood (Nate, too!). But I guess when you really get down to it, there are plenty of differences to discuss as well. I hope it goes without saying that everyone has different childhood experiences and upbringings and that is totally fine by me! Just because I was raised one way doesn't mean it's the 'right way' or that someone else who wasn't raised like me is missing out. I feel the need for this disclaimer before I touch on a few heavy topics of childhood and priorities in raising children. This is just my own personal story and the ongoing story of my children. Differences are good! Okay then.

Big city versus small town upbringing:
I grew up in Jefferson City, Missouri which is the commonly forgotten Capital in the middle of the state.  I thought it was a 'big city' with a population of about 45,000, which was gigantic compared to the tiny farming towns surrounding us in JCMO. My high school was huge since there were only two in our city: public (mine, graduating class of 800) or private (much smaller but still a huge competitor of ours in athletics). The size of my high school compared to the size of my hometown is kind of interesting, since I never realized other truly BIG cities had suburbs with their own schools, own little world, and their own culture. You either went to the public high school or the private one and that was that.

My kids are growing up in a suburb of Milwaukee that has roughly 45,000 people living here, which is basically the exact same size as my hometown. And in case this isn't already known: we live in the same suburb where Nate grew up, and his parents still live in Nate's childhood home just a mile away from us. But the big difference is that our suburb is a part of the Milwaukee metro area that has 1.5 million people calling it 'home.' So Truman, Cecelia, and Porter are definitely 'city kids' compared to myself.

And one of our favorite things about this suburb is the walkability: we can walk to school, walk to the downtown village, walk to playgrounds, etc., which feels very city-like. I definitely did not live in a walkable town growing up, we didn't have sidewalks, and my childhood home was built in the 1980s instead of our current home from the 1920s. That part doesn't really matter when it comes to 'upbringing' but I think our neighborhood and suburb have a much different feel than my hometown, too. I'll call Truman, Cecelia, and Porter city kids---but city kids in a suburb. I was a small town city kid with a side of farm girl;)

I went to St. Louis University and had a bit of a culture shock as I realized that I was considered a small town girl. Not to mention that when I chose a Jesuit college I didn't have a clue as to how different I'd be there since I was not Catholic and 90% of the kids there were at least 'sort of' Catholic. I think a lot of the city kids thought I was a po-dunk-farm girl-atheist or something, which was shocking since I believed myself to be a city girl with a solid religious background (more on that part in a bit)! My family did technically own a beef cattle farm, although faming wasn't my dad's primary job. Dad is a CPA who would change out of his business suit into his denim overalls and steel toed boots in the evenings to inseminate a cow or something crazy. So yes, I guess I was a bit of a 'farm girl' but we didn't live on the farm and I've never driven a tractor;)

More on my experience being somewhat of a religious outsider at college: I remember the first Ash Wednesday I experienced while at SLU. My friend Keri came to class with ashes on her forehead and I was perplexed, telling her that she had dirt on her face. Ah, I learned so much about Catholicism in college because of the religious studies we were required to take, but also because of my numerous Catholic friends in college. I have gone up to the front of church at more Catholic weddings than I can count---getting a blessing with my arms crossed over my chest instead of receiving communion became more comfortable for me with each subsequent wedding. Which brings me to another topic when comparing childhoods.

Religion:
Although I went to a public high school, I attended a Lutheran grade school from kindergarten through eighth grade. Which is ironic because we went to a Baptist church--one that was a very prominent feature of my childhood as we went every Sunday, most Wednesday nights, did vacation bible school and Sunday School, and my mom was employed by our church for many years. Papaw was even the very first pastor at our church, so it was definitely a big part of my childhood. But my dad grew up Lutheran and attended the same grade school that I did, so I had a nice blend of denominations as I formed my own faith base. Lutheran grade school, public high school, Baptist church, and then a Catholic university. This could have become quite confusing for me but I am thankful for the variety of religions I've been exposed to over the years.

As for my kids: Nate was brought up Catholic but married me in an art gallery with my Baptist grandfather officiating;) And now we attend a Lutheran church because I consider Lutheranism a nice compromise between Catholicism and Baptists. Nate and I really enjoy our church mostly because it's laid back, geared towards families with young children, and the pastors are fantastic. But one way in which my kids will have a different upbringing than my own? We do not go to church every Sunday (shame, shame--I have Catholic guilt for this without being Catholic). For awhile when it was just Truman and even into the baby Cecelia days, we did make it every-other-Sunday and I believe someday we'll make that a priority again. But right now during this chaotic stage of life with three very small kids, it's just not. I believe we can still teach our children about God and faith and religion without going to church every Sunday.

For instance, Truman is really into this storybook Bible these days:
All Photos-306

We will read stories from it and discussions are prompted about God, Jesus, faith, and being kind to others. Truman also loves any of the stories that have to do with battles and death and I sort of forgot how intense a lot of the biblical stories can be. I mean, the crucifixion in general? BIG topic of discussion and something that I'm sure we will continue to talk about for years to come. At least, I hope we do! Cecelia doesn't 'get it' yet but reading stories with Truman is one way that the kids are getting exposed to religion without attending church every Sunday. Plus, Christmas and Easter are both opportune times to steer the kids towards the real meaning of these holidays. But of course, opening presents and eating candy are a hundred times more kid friendly than the birth and death of Jesus. BUT ANYWAY, religion was a huge part of my upbringing and it's also a part of my kids' lives. But probably not as prominent as it was for me as a child. When discussing religion at all, I feel the need to say that everyone is different here and it's alright if you weren't/aren't religious and don't want your kids to be either. I hope talking about faith isn't offensive because yes, it can be a sensitive subject!

Schooling:
Already touched on this one, but Nate went to public schools for elementary, middle school and high school, then met the love of his life at a Jesuit college;) I went to private grade school/middle school, public high school, and was Nate's love of his life at the Jesuit college. Nate even attended the exact same middle school and high school that our kids will attend, different elementary schools only. Our kids will go to public schools until college and then I will pray with everything I have they choose a state school after high school. Private colleges are beyond my comprehension for tuition costs so hopefully all three of our children are GENIUSES and get extremely awesome scholarships somewhere (that goes for a state school or a private school, actually). Be geniuses, kids!

So size of the city=different, religion=same but different, and schooling choice=same. More on the concept of the family unit next.

My WAHM Day

So I thought I should do a little post about what life was like up until this last month (I am immobile at 34 weeks pregnant with twins now) since it will be changing very soon. I always struggled with being away from Bradley when I was working full time and once I took on a part time job we realized doing that and not paying for daycare was not that much different than what I was making at my full time job. We figured out our budget and I was able to start staying at home as a WAHM (work at home mom) with Bradley and it has been the best thing ever!! Now don't get me wrong - most days are a shit show and insanely exhausting, but I love it. Working at home can be tricky but it is absolutely doable since I work 15 hours a week (about two full work days without daycare if you look at it that way). Here is what a typical day is like for this WAHM!

7AM wake up - this has been such a huge perk to me staying home. When I was working out of the home I had to LEAVE by 7am to drop Bradley off at daycare and get to work by 8. I am such a sleeper so this has been amazing!

7:30ish Bradley gets up. He usually hands me his paci (he gets it in his crib only) and goes potty (we keep one in his room still) then tells me how he wants to "go see Gordon" (his Thomas train downstairs).

For breakfast, Bradley used to eat oatmeal with banana and milk every single day and it was so easy! Within the last month or two he has started refusing it so we either have cereal, pancakes, yogurt/granola, etc. I still like oatmeal with lots of chocolate chips so that is often my breakfast.

We used to go on daily walks in the morning and I hope to get back into that once I can after the twins are here! Sprinkles and Chimi often hitch a ride, too. :)

9 - Get ready to go play! Prior to my current state, we ALWAYS did something and left the house in the morning even if it was just getting groceries or going to Target. Usually a park, zoo, playground, pool (in summer), Crayola, music class or museum. Often times with friends!

Typical summer mom outfit. :)

I still remember taking this pic on my first day home with Bradley and we were headed to the pool. I couldn't believe it!

Now since I literally can't move that well it isn't safe to leave the house and go places with Bradley - I can't chase him and he is crazy! He recently started pre-preschool two mornings a week which has been awesome for both of us - he can get some socialization and energy out and I have been going to my weekly doc appointments during that time. On the other mornings we have been playing outside now that we have the fenced in yard (pic is from last summer before the fence) and having friends over to play which has been amazing!

We have been getting together a lot with Bradley's friend Mila that we know from my Mama group I was in when Bradley was a baby! Recently my friend had twin girls so it is so fun to hang out all together and for me to observe what it is like with twins! I just adore Rosie and these twins are AMAZING as well - they are perfect sleepers, barely make a noise, so happy...probably a bad idea for me to get used to twins that are like that! :)

12 - Back home for lunch if we had left - Bradley's former favorites were mac and cheese, baked beans, blueberries, or nachos. I have a massive picky eater on my hands so now sometimes he will eat toast, pancakes, or just a plateful of oranges. I'm hoping someday he will eat more!! If we are running late I give Bradley PB crackers and fruit pouches in the car or at our location.

1:30-3:30 Bradley's nap time/my work time! We always read books for about half an hour before I put him in his crib (still in his crib - thinking maybe at age 3 we will look at a toddler bed?). I try and work the whole time he is sleeping to get my hours in, but this also can sometimes be the only time to get things done around the house. I also desperately need daytime naps at the moment because I don't sleep well at night with this heavy belly!

This pic cracks me up - one day last year Bradley was jumping all over his crib before falling asleep and his pants fell down, then he fell asleep. :)

3:30 Bradley is usually up and if he is super crabby from his nap I let him watch some Bubble Guppies and eat snacks while I start figuring out dinner. Otherwise we play in the basement or outside and if we are lucky sometimes we play with his neighbor friends!

6 - Dada home! Nate is so good at kind of taking over at this point so I get a little break. We try and eat together every night but sometimes Bradley is hungry earlier than Nate is home. When it is nice out we eat on the porch! Then he will play with Dada in the basement or outside, or go straight to bath if I haven't bathed him earlier in the day (we do baths every other day, sometimes daily if he is super dirty or just wants one).

PS - check out this pic of Nate when he was little. Hello little brunette Bradley!

7 - Start reading books (almost always with Dada), brush teeth and get ready for bed.

8 - Bradley is usually asleep and I go back to work. If I get enough done during the day I can relax, take a bath and either watch a show with Nate - we just finished Breaking Bad or I try and read Harry Potter - I only have one book left! But usually I have to work at least a little at night (sometimes a lot).

10 - We are pretty good about going to bed at 10. I sometimes get sucked into Instagram and will scroll into oblivion but I am really trying to put my phone away.

Probably not that exciting but that is my current life! I remember seeing this quote when I was working and feeling in a rut and so depressed I never saw Bradley. I am so happy we were able to make a change!

Staying at home is HARD but beyond rewarding, and I know I will never get these years back when Bradley (and soon - the twins!) is young and not in school yet. I know it isn't for everyone, but it has been the best change for me. I will never regret waking up and spending every day with one of my favorite faces in the world - this one!
